Dear Neighbor,

I hope you had a great June, and I want to wish you a happy Juneteenth and Pride Month! I’ve been busy at work in DC and all around NY-16. Here’s an update on what my office and I have been up to this month.

I kicked off the month with my first annual Youth Leadership Conference. We brought together students from across the district to work together on solving the issues they face every day. I had a great time listening to these young people and their innovative ideas. You can watch a video about the conference here. Policy should be driven by the people who are most impacted, so I also invited young people to Washington to hold a briefing for Members of Congress and staff on the importance of youth-led policy. Afterwards, I held a press conference in support of youth-led policy making with Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) and Summer Lee (PA-12).

All of the Pride events across our district this month were so joyful and I had a great time celebrating with everyone. It’s now more important than ever to stand with our LGBTQ+ communities in the face of attacks to their humanity. I’m sending peace and love to our LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors in NY-16 and around the world.

Team Bowman wants to wish a belated Happy Father’s Day to all the dads and father figures out there! I’m so grateful I spent the day with my family and three kids. This Father’s Day, my mind was on the Black maternal mortality crisis. Black women die from childbirth complications at almost 3 times the rate of white moms, and most of those deaths are preventable. Childbirth should never be a death sentence, we have to do more to extend care to marginalized women everywhere. You can read my Op-Ed about the maternal mortality crisis and what we can do to end it here.

I also attended Juneteenth celebrations throughout the district, which commemorated the end of slavery. In honor of all that Black people in America have overcome and the systemic racism that we continue to face, we must keep up the fight for racial justice. In that spirit, I traveled to Atlanta for the Alight Arise Align conference on reparations where I got to discuss the issue and learn from other movement leaders. Our nation needs to do right by Black Americans and address the inequities created by the legacy of slavery. That’s what the movement for reparations and celebrating Juneteenth is all about.

At the Education and Workforce committee, I spoke out against Republicans’ hateful and divisive resolution that would ban local governments from housing migrants in schools. As a nation of immigrants, we have a responsibility to welcome our new neighbors and make sure they have the resources they need to thrive.

Last week, I had the opportunity to visit the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where I learned about advances in fusion energy technologies. It was great to meet with leaders in fusion energy after having several hearings and markups on the topic on the Science, Space, and Technology Committee this month. Back in NY-16, I toured SEEQC, a quantum computing company headquartered in our community. Quantum computing is the future and I’m proud that we’re manufacturing this technology right here in Westchester. Thank you to the teams at SEEQC and Lawrence Livermore for showing me around!

Join me for Coffee with the Congressman on Saturday, July 8th at 11:00am to talk about issues that are important to you, or just come say hello! My team and I will be at Bronx Community Board 12, 4101 White Plains Road, Bronx, NY, 10466. You can register here.

My office and I would also love to celebrate members of the NY-16 disabled community for Disability Pride Month in July. If you have someone you’d like to nominate, please submit a form here.

Throughout this month my office held mobile constituent services events throughout the district, and stay tuned - we’ll be coming to your neighborhood soon! If you need assistance with any federal agency, you can find us at one of our upcoming Mobile Constituent Services, email us at Bowman.Casework@mail.house.gov, or call our office at the numbers below.

Peace and love,

Congressman Jamaal Bowman Ed.D.
